Shopping in ChatGPT after Instant Checkout: what changed and what brands should do now
ChatGPT no longer checks shoppers out itself: OpenAI ended Instant Checkout as a standalone product in March 2026 and moved buying to apps and to retailers' own sites. Shoppers now find products in ChatGPT and pay on the brand's checkout, so what decides the sale is whether ChatGPT can read your products and send people to a page that converts. Our read: that's the better outcome for brands, even if it wasn't the plan.
What happened to Instant Checkout?
OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in September 2025, so shoppers could buy without leaving the chat. Etsy sellers in the US went live first, with more than a million Shopify merchants listed as coming soon.
It didn't take. Walmart, which offered about 200,000 products through it, said purchases inside ChatGPT converted at a third of the rate of shoppers who clicked through to its own site, and called the experience “unsatisfying.”
In March 2026 OpenAI ended Instant Checkout as a standalone product. “Instant Checkout is transitioning to apps,” an OpenAI spokesperson told CNBC. OpenAI's own announcement said the first version “did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide.”
How does shopping in ChatGPT work now?
Discovery stays in ChatGPT. Checkout moves to the retailer. Products get in four ways.
- Product feeds from big retailers.Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe's, Best Buy, The Home Depot and Wayfair are among the retailers feeding product data into ChatGPT through OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), shown with product images, ratings and side by side comparisons.
- Shopify merchants, connected automatically.Their products reach ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog with no extra work, and the shopper finishes on the merchant's own store.
- Brand apps.A brand builds its own app inside ChatGPT. Walmart has one, Louis Vuitton showed one in June 2026, and Prada launched a pilot on 28 October 2026 in the UK, the US and Italy.
- Try on and a library.Since 1 October 2026 shoppers can try clothes and accessories on from a selfie or a full body photo, and save products to a library to come back to.
Why did checkout move back to the brand?
The reporting points to one reason above all: conversion inside the chat was weaker than on the retailer's own site. OpenAI's own word for what was missing was flexibility.
We'd add another, and it's only our opinion: people don't hand their card details to a chatbot for a jacket they found thirty seconds ago. Trust in a checkout is built slowly, by the brand, over years. A chat window hadn't earned it yet.
A brand's own checkout already has its payment provider, its delivery options, its returns and its customer accounts. Handing the shopper over at the moment they want to buy keeps all of that working, and the brand keeps the customer. So the change is simple to state: ChatGPT is where shoppers find you, and your own checkout is where you win or lose the sale.
What should brands do now?
Treat ChatGPT as a place shoppers find you, and make sure what it finds is right. Six things, in order. None of them is glamorous, which is probably why they get skipped.
- Get the product data right.Accurate titles, prices, availability and every variant, sizes and colours included, in a feed you keep current. An assistant can only recommend what it can read correctly. At most brands the feed is a mess nobody owns. Give it an owner.
- Mark up your pages.Structured data, schema.org Product and Offer on product pages and Organization on your homepage, so an assistant reads the facts instead of guessing them.
- Publish policies agents can read.Delivery, returns and contact details on plain pages, linked from every product. Shoppers ask about returns before they buy, and an assistant can only answer from what it can read.
- Earn reviews and mentions.Engines learn about a brand from what other people publish about it. Reviews and coverage on sites people trust give them something to cite.
- Give agents an address. An MCP address and a UCP profile let any agent that connects search your range and get live price and stock, instead of scraping your pages.
- Make the landing page convert. The shopper arrives from ChatGPT ready to buy. Fast product pages, guest checkout and a clean mobile flow matter more than they did.
None of this needs a big team or a big budget. You don't need more people. You need the boring things done properly, and kept done.
Do you need your own ChatGPT app?
Not to start. Shopify merchants are connected automatically and the big retailers feed ChatGPT directly. A custom app like Prada's is a project for a brand with a reason to design its own conversation. For most brands, readable product data comes first.
If you're not on Shopify, Storefront gives you that from the feed you already send to Google Shopping: your own agent address and UCP profile, live in minutes. Your agent address works in ChatGPT today as a custom app, and ChatGPT shopping follows as OpenAI approves your feed. Shoppers buy on your own checkout, you pay one flat monthly price, and we take no cut of your sales.
Where can shoppers pay inside an agent today?
Mostly in the US. At our last check, on 25 October 2026, Google AI Mode and Gemini checked out in the US and were rolling out to Canada and Australia, Meta checked out in six countries, and Copilot and Perplexity in the US only. No agent checked out UK or EU shoppers natively. The full list is in our comparison.
So if you sell in Europe, checkout inside the agent isn't this year's question. The question is whether the agent finds you and sends the shopper somewhere they can pay.
Where do you start?
With what the engines say about you now. The free score shows how the AI engines see your brand and whether shopping agents can read your products, with the fixes ranked by what they're worth. It's a better use of a minute than another meeting about AI strategy.
Questions
Can you still buy inside ChatGPT?
Not through Instant Checkout, which OpenAI ended as a standalone product in March 2026. Shoppers find products in ChatGPT and complete the purchase on the retailer's own site.
When did Instant Checkout end?
In March 2026, when OpenAI ended it as a standalone product. A spokesperson told CNBC that Instant Checkout is transitioning to apps.
How do products get into ChatGPT now?
Big retailers feed product data through OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol, Shopify merchants are connected through Shopify Catalog, and some brands, Walmart among them, build their own app inside ChatGPT.
Do Shopify merchants need to do anything?
They're connected automatically and don't need an app of their own; checkout sends the shopper to their store. Accurate product data still decides whether they get recommended.
What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol?
OpenAI's protocol for agentic commerce. In ChatGPT shopping it carries retailers' product data, shown with images, ratings and side by side comparisons.
What should a brand fix first?
Its product data: titles, prices, availability and variants that are accurate and current. Then structured data, readable policies, reviews and an agent address.
